Introduction

Formerly established as the Computer Group and the Communications Group within the Department of Electrical Engineering, the Institute of Computer and Communication Engineering (CCE) was founded in 2003 under the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. This integration was initiated to meet the immense demand for ICT (Information and Communications Technology) talent in domestic industries, foster closer collaboration with academia and research institutions in Southern Taiwan, expand research domains, and enhance overall competitiveness.

With the approval of the Ministry of Education, the Master’s program was established in 2003, followed by the Ph.D. program in 2004. Many of our alumni have since become key executives or founders in industries related to wireless communications, computer science, networking, multimedia, information security, signal processing, electromagnetics & antennas, and RFIC (Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit) design.

In 2020, the Computer Science and Information Engineering Group (formerly the Computer and Network Group) returned to the Department of Electrical Engineering. Since then, our institute has pivoted to focus primarily on communication systems, networking, signal processing, electromagnetics, antennas, and RFIC design. To better reflect our current strategic focus, the institute has received approval from the Ministry of Education to be renamed the "Institute of Communications Engineering" (ICE) starting from the 2026 academic year.

While narrowing our focus to the field of communications engineering, we continue to maintain close, interdisciplinary collaboration with the Department of Electrical Engineering and other research groups across the university. As a vital hub for ICT research in Taiwan, our institute shoulders the critical responsibility of technological R&D and education in communications engineering. We are dedicated to cultivating high-tech communication talent to meet national and industrial needs, ultimately strengthening Taiwan's global power and competitiveness in ICT.
